WCAG 2.2 Success Criteria Explained

A success criterion is the outcome to evaluate; a technique is a way of implementing or demonstrating it.

Criterion, technique and test

A success criterion is the outcome to evaluate; a technique is a way of implementing or demonstrating it. Read the authoritative W3C criterion and its understanding material. Passing one tool’s rule does not establish that every implementation of the criterion has been examined.

Use the relevant level and version

Record the WCAG version and level for your assessment. The existing guided checklist on this site presents WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA criteria using the existing data set. Applicable policy or procurement requirements may name a different version; do not silently substitute a newer version without documenting the mapping.

Worked contrast and interaction example

An element with supplied foreground and background colours can be checked for contrast, while keyboard order and the usefulness of its accessible name need context. A dynamic state may differ from the initial markup. Record both the automated observation and the running-service manual test rather than reducing them to a single score.

Track scope and untested items

For each criterion identify the pages, components and states examined. Mark untested items explicitly and explain not-applicable results. A screen-reader result should identify the browser, assistive technology and relevant action, so another evaluator can reproduce it.

Use findings for remediation

Write the user impact, reproduction steps, criterion reference and evidence before assigning a fix. Retest the corrected component in the affected flows and preserve previous findings. The criterion number helps organise the work; the evidence and verified correction establish what changed.
